The Zacapa Centenario Edition XO Rum, debuting in the year 2000, won gold, then platinum awards too at the International Rum Festival in the super-premium category. The distillery was established in 1976, its name pays tribute to the 100-year existence of the town of Zacapa found in the eastern part of Guatemala. The rum made here is made from once-pressed, concentrated 'sugarcane honey', which process is much rarer than the widely applied molasses-based rum-making. The ageing of the distillates is also done with a quite unique process among rums, since they apply the ageing method called solera of the sherry made in Spain. The essence of this is that the oak barrels are stored stacked on top of each other in huge warehouses and the content of the barrel in the lowest row is always bottled, replenishing it from the one above, thus proceeding all the way to the topmost barrel. Through this they can guarantee a constant flavour and quality. The above-mentioned particularities of the production process and of course the expertise of master blender Lorena Vazquez also contribute greatly to the successes of Ron Zacapa. The rums of Zacapa have won countless international accolades and awards, among others Zacapa was the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Rum Festival, and the Chicago-based Beverage Testing Institute rewarded its drinks with scores above 95.
