Asahikawa has 167 rivers and more than 750 bridges. It is a place blessed with water, which is essential for sake-making. The underground water used for the making of the Otokoyama sake is freely accessible to the public. The locals often bring several bottles with them. The predecessor of Otokoyama, Yamazaki Shuzo, was founded in 1887 in Sapporo, and was transferred to Asahikawa in 1899. The "Otokoyama" name originates from a famous sake that was born in the region today Hyogo prefecture, however ceased to exist at the beginning of the Meiji era. Since then many sakes in Japan have taken on the Otokoyama name, but the brewery which officially inherited the name from the original was Asahikawa Otokoyama.
